Terms of Service

Last updated: April 29, 2026

Please read these Terms of Service ("Terms") carefully before using SciReel ("the Service"). By creating an account or uploading a paper, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. What SciReel Does

SciReel is an AI-powered tool that converts academic research papers (PDF format) into video abstracts. The output consists of an MP4 video file, an SRT subtitle file, and a written transcript. The video is generated automatically using artificial intelligence and is intended as a first draft for the author to review and confirm before submission to a journal.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use SciReel. By using the Service, you represent that you are of legal age and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.

3. Your Account

You sign in using Google OAuth. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your Google account. We are not liable for any loss arising from unauthorized use of your account. You may delete your account at any time by contacting us at hello@scireel.io.

4. Your Content and Rights

4.1 You must have the right to upload the paper

By uploading a PDF to SciReel, you represent and warrant that:

  • You are an author of the paper, or you have explicit permission from the authors to create a video abstract.
  • Uploading and processing the paper does not violate any publisher copyright, embargo, or confidentiality agreement.
  • You are not uploading materials that are classified, export- controlled, or otherwise restricted.

4.2 License to process your content

By uploading a paper, you grant SciReel a limited, non-exclusive license to process the PDF for the sole purpose of generating your video abstract. We do not claim ownership of your paper or the generated output. We do not use your paper to train AI models.

4.3 Ownership of output

The generated MP4, SRT, and transcript files are yours. You retain all rights to the output subject to any rights held by the underlying paper's authors or publishers.

5. Author Review Responsibility

SciReel generates a complete draft package automatically. Before submitting any output to a journal or conference, you must review the video, subtitles, and transcript and take responsibility for the accuracy of the information presented. SciReel is not responsible for inaccuracies in the AI-generated narration script; the author bears full responsibility for the submitted video abstract.

6. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

The narration script, voiceover audio, and video structure are generated by artificial intelligence. AI-generated content may contain errors, omissions, or misrepresentations of the source paper. You must review the output carefully before submitting it to any journal or conference.

Important: Some journals prohibit AI-synthesized audio in video abstracts (for example, JoVE explicitly prohibits AI audio). You are responsible for verifying that the output format complies with your target journal's specific requirements before submission.

6.1 Third-Party AI Model Notice

SciReel is an independent product that uses third-party AI models, including Google Gemini and MiniMax, to help generate draft video abstracts. SciReel is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google, MiniMax, or other model providers.

7. Acceptable Use and Prohibited Content

You agree not to use SciReel to:

  • Upload papers you do not have the right to process.
  • Generate video abstracts for papers you did not author and for which you have no authorization.
  • Upload or request processing of pornographic, erotic, nude, sexually explicit, sexually suggestive, fetish, exploitative, or otherwise NSFW material.
  • Upload non-academic documents such as marketing brochures, advertisements, sales decks, entertainment scripts, or other materials that are not legitimate research papers.
  • Use the Service for plagiarism, essay-mill, ghostwriting, piracy, impersonation, or other deceptive or infringing activity.
  • Circumvent any access controls, rate limits, or security measures.
  • Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law or regulation.
  • Resell or sublicense access to the Service without written permission.

We use automated checks, including Creem's Moderation API, to review generation requests and AI image prompts for policy compliance before generation. We may reject documents or prompts that are prohibited, unsupported, or not eligible for SciReel.

8. Billing, Cancellations, Refunds, and Quotas

Pricing, credit amounts, and validity periods are shown on the Service at the time of purchase. SciReel currently offers 100 free credits at registration, one-time credit packs, and subscription plans processed through Creem. One complete video generation (MP4, SRT subtitles, and transcript) costs 100 credits.

Product Hunt launch promotion: if you enter code PRODUCTHUNT during a paid checkout on or before June 30, 2026, SciReel will grant 100 bonus credits after the paid Creem webhook is confirmed. Promotional credits are granted once per account and follow the validity period of the paid plan used for that checkout.

If you purchase a subscription, you can manage or cancel it from your SciReel dashboard by selecting Manage subscription, which opens the Creem customer portal. You may cancel at any time. Future renewal charges stop according to the cancellation option presented in the portal and Creem's records.

Refund requests are reviewed case by case. If you believe you were charged in error, did not receive purchased credits, saw an incorrect renewal, or encountered another billing issue, contact us at hello@scireel.io. We aim to respond to billing and refund requests within 3 business days. Approved refunds are generally returned through the original payment method or the payment platform used for the purchase.

Because SciReel sells digital services and credits that can be consumed immediately, completed credit grants and delivered video packages are generally non-refundable except where required by law or where we determine that a billing or delivery error occurred.

SciReel may impose limits on the number of video abstracts you can generate per account. We reserve the right to change pricing, credits, quotas, and plan structure with reasonable advance notice to registered users.

9. Service Availability

We aim to keep SciReel available and functional, but we do not guarantee uptime or uninterrupted access. Generation jobs are processed in a serial queue; estimated wait times are indicative only. We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time.

10. Intellectual Property

SciReel and its underlying software, design, and branding are owned by SciReel and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or distribute the Service or its interface without written permission.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE AI-GENERATED OUTPUT WILL BE ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR SUITABLE FOR SUBMISSION TO ANY PARTICULAR JOURNAL.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SCIREEL SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DAMAGE ARISING FROM JOURNAL REJECTION, INACCURATE AI OUTPUT, OR DATA LOSS. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

13. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or engage in conduct we determine to be harmful to other users or the Service. You may stop using the Service at any time. Upon termination, your files will be deleted in accordance with our data retention policy (see Privacy Policy).

Unless a shorter period is required by law or a support request, SciReel retains uploaded PDFs, generated MP4 files, subtitles, transcripts, and related job assets for up to 30 days before automatic deletion from storage. Public sample or demo assets published by SciReel under separate `samples/` paths are not customer job files and may remain available longer, including permanently.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the People's Republic of China, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

In the event of any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms or the Service, the parties agree to first attempt to resolve the dispute through good-faith negotiation. If the dispute cannot be resolved through negotiation within 30 days, it shall be submitted to the competent courts of the People's Republic of China.

15. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes by email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
